The Anaesthetic for ODPs Course has been developed as part of GESH’s commitment to workforce development, patient safety, and advancing perioperative practice. This programme aims to strengthen clinical knowledge, technical skills, and confidence among ODPs working within anaesthetics while fostering a culture of continuous learning, simulation, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The course combines practical workshops, simulation-based learning, and safety-focused education covering key areas such as Blood Track, difficult airway management, paediatric emergencies, obstetric scenarios, and anaphylaxis management. These sessions have been designed not only to improve individual competency but also to enhance team performance during high-pressure situations.
As part of future development, the vision is to expand this programme beyond anaesthetics to include scrub and recovery pathways, creating a comprehensive perioperative education programme that supports ODPs across all domains of practice. The long-term aim is to provide inclusive learning opportunities for all GESH ODPs, encouraging shared learning, career progression, and competency development regardless of speciality area.
Importantly, the programme aligns with Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) principles by using learning from incidents, near misses, and governance themes to shape education and drive quality improvement. Through reflective practice, simulation, and multidisciplinary engagement, the course seeks to translate learning into meaningful improvements in patient safety, clinical outcomes, and team performance.
By investing in education today, we are building a resilient, skilled, and future-ready perioperative workforce capable of delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care for patients across GESH.
